Sedgwick County Clerk of Court Profile
The Clerk of Court for Sedgwick County is the court-side record custodian for cases handled through Sedgwick Combined Court. The official Judicial Branch judges and staff page lists Kathy Browning as Clerk of Court and Jury Commissioner for Phillips County and Sedgwick County, with email kathy.browning@judicial.state.co.us and phone 970-762-7010. The local Sedgwick Combined Court contact remains the central public counter and request point for Sedgwick County court users.
The Clerk of Court function is separate from Kurt Dilsaver's County Clerk & Recorder office. The Clerk & Recorder page lists county recording, marriage licenses, elections, motor vehicle titles and registrations, driver's license services, clerk-to-board work, liquor licenses, and county website maintenance. Court case records are not recorded documents. A divorce decree, criminal disposition, probate letters, traffic ticket, or Register of Action should be requested through the court process.

Clerk of Court vs Clerk Recorder
Sedgwick County's split clerk structure is one of the most important record-search facts in the county. The Colorado Judicial Branch Clerk of Court keeps case records. The county Clerk & Recorder keeps recorded documents and marriage-license records. Both offices may be in the same courthouse, but the legal custodian changes by record type, so a request sent to the wrong office can produce a delay or a referral.
| Office | Records handled | Contact route |
|---|---|---|
| Clerk of Court | Civil, criminal, traffic, divorce, probate, juvenile, protection order, docket, Register of Action, certified court copies | Sedgwick Combined Court and the Judicial Branch record request form |
| County Clerk & Recorder | Real estate, UCC, military discharges, plats, surveys, marriage licenses, miscellaneous recordings, elections, motor vehicle and driver's license services | 315 Cedar St., Suite 220; 970-474-3346 |
| Sheriff | Police records, custody questions, bonds, service of process, traffic enforcement, sheriff fees | 315 Cedar St., Suite 320; 970-474-3355 |
The official Sedgwick County recordings page shows the recorder's fee and recording rules, which are not the same as court-copy rules.
Use that recorder channel for recorded documents, while using the Clerk of Court channel for Sedgwick County court records.
Sedgwick County Court Request Form
The Colorado Judicial Branch Record/Document Request Form is the main online route for court documents. It is used for case documents, certified or exemplified copies, family records such as divorce decrees, criminal records such as complaint/information and disposition/sentence orders, civil judgment documents, and probate documents such as letters, wills, trusts, applications, petitions, closings, and claims. Docket search can help find a case lead, but the request form is the document channel.
The form also sets expectations about cost. Copies, certified documents, name searches, off-site retrieval, and research or redaction can all create charges. Juvenile and probate records or documents with confidential or protected information may require a U.S. government-issued photo ID. If the requester is unsure whether a record is court-held, the Clerk of Court can clarify before payment or a formal copy request is made.
| Field | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Requester name and contact information | Address fields marked required | Includes name, business name, email, phone, address, city, state, and ZIP. |
| Case Number | No, if unknown | Helpful when known; example format includes year, case class, and sequence. |
| Case Type | Optional but important | Options include civil, divorce, felony, juvenile, misdemeanor, probate, protection order, small claims, traffic, and more. |
| Year case was filed | Optional | Year options run from 2026 back to 1873. |
| County or location of records | Important | Select Sedgwick County or use the unknown county option when necessary. |
| Party information | Yes | Names on the case are required. |
| Requested documents | Required by request | Choose family, criminal, civil, probate, other, certification, or exemplification options. |
Request Certified Sedgwick County Copies
Certified copies are court-authenticated copies used when a plain copy is not enough. A certified divorce decree, disposition order, probate letters, protection order, or judgment document may be required for a formal transaction. Exemplified copies are a higher-certification form and may be requested when the receiving agency requires that level of authentication. The Clerk of Court can issue these court certifications when the record is available and releasable.
- Identify whether the record is a court document or a county recorded document.
- Search the docket if the case number, case class, or filing year is unknown.
- Open the court record request form and select Sedgwick County as the location.
- Choose the case type and exact document, such as decree, disposition order, ticket, letters, or Register of Action.
- Select certified or exemplified copy if the receiving agency requires it.
- Provide party names, date of birth if useful, case number if known, and any other identifying details.
- Respond to court fee, ID, redaction, or retrieval requests before expecting final delivery.
Note: A certified court copy is different from a recorder-certified copy of a marriage license, deed, or other recorded document.
Sedgwick County Clerk of Court Fees
Court request fees come from the Judicial Branch request form and the CJD 06-01 fee reference used by that form. Recorder fees come from the county recorder page. The two fee systems should not be mixed. A certified divorce decree from court uses the court fee table, while a certified recorded marriage document uses the recorder fee table.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Court copy per page | $0.25, with a $15 maximum for parties and their attorneys and no maximum for non-parties |
| Transcript of Judgment | $25 |
| Certificate of Satisfaction | $20 |
| Certified or exemplified court copy per document | $20 |
| Name search | $5 |
| Off-site case file retrieval | Actual cost of retrieval |
| Research or redaction after first hour | $30 per hour, assessed in 15-minute increments |
Sedgwick County Court Record Types
The Clerk of Court record set includes the case categories used by Sedgwick Combined Court. District Court handles felony criminal cases, major civil matters, domestic relations, juvenile, probate, mental health, and appeals from County Court. County Court handles lower-level matters such as misdemeanors, traffic infractions, small claims, and civil cases within county-court jurisdiction. The combined court model means the public may visit one court location while still dealing with different case types and rules.
Common requestable documents include complaint/information, disposition/sentence order, protection order, ticket, Register of Action, divorce decree, parenting plan, separation agreement, support order, petition, order for judgment, transcript of judgment, satisfaction of judgment, probate letters, will, trust, application, closing, and claims. Some items may be public, while juvenile, probate, sealed, mental health, and protected data may be limited or redacted.
The county's current recording index is useful for recorded documents from August 1973 forward, but it is not the Clerk of Court system.
The current recording index supports recorder research, while court files still require Judicial Branch court channels.
Older Sedgwick County Records
Older court files may require court retrieval. The court request form allows filing years back to 1873 and lists actual cost for off-site file retrieval. When asking for an older court case, provide the case number if known, names on the case, case type, filing year, and any document names. A broad request can trigger extra research time and redaction review, so a targeted document request is usually more efficient.
Older recorded documents follow a different path. Sedgwick County's recorder page links the historical recording index for documents before August 1973 through ARCA Search. That may help with marriage, land, military discharge, and miscellaneous recorded-document research, but it does not replace a probate, divorce, civil, criminal, or traffic court file request.
The historical recording index covers the older county-recording side of Sedgwick County research.
Use historical recording indexes for recorder records, and ask the Clerk of Court about older court file retrieval when the record is a case file.
Sedgwick County Court Access Limits
Colorado court access is governed by Chief Justice Directive 05-01, statutes, court rules, local orders, and privacy rules. The Colorado Open Records Act is a county-government record route, but state court case files are handled through the Judicial Branch. For county records outside court case files, Sedgwick County publishes a CORA policy and request form. For court records, use the Judicial Branch request form or the Sedgwick Combined Court contact.
Restricted court categories include juvenile records, sealed and expunged records, some probate records, mental health proceedings, adoption records, and records with personal identifiers. The Clerk of Court may require identification, redact confidential data, or deny public release when the record is restricted by law or order.
The Sedgwick County CORA policy and request form is the county-government fallback for non-court records.
Use CORA for county records, and use Clerk of Court channels for Judicial Branch case documents.
